Job Title
Planning Consultant

Role – explain what you do at Strategic Planning
As a member of Strategic Planning's planning team, I am involved in providing planning advice and site appraisals to clients as well as preparing and administering planning applications at a variety of scales for residential, commercial and tourist developments, many located within rural areas. In addition to this, I prepare detailed statements of evidence for Planning Appeals, often representing clients at appeal hearings where necessary. In addition to this I have been able to focus on providing specialist advice in relation to obtaining Lawful Development Certificates to regularise development without planning permission and resolving enforcement issues..

Brief background on your career and qualifications
I graduated from University of Auckland in New Zealand in 1995 with a first class honours degree in Planning. Following graduation I worked as a Development Planner for my local district council, North Shore City. In this post I was responsible for the processing and assessing planning and subdivision applications both at local and regional level. This role also involved presentation of planning applications to councillors and representation at public hearings. Experience was also gained at this time responding to public submissions in relation to the Draft District Plan. I entered into private practice in Northern Ireland in 2004.

What do you do outside of work - hobbies, interests etc
Outside of work I try to squeeze in the role of husband, father and head rugby coach to Belfast Harlequins 1st and 2nd rugby XV's. In addition to this, if I am fortunate I may on occasion sneak in a few hours of sleep at night and very occasionally actually get to eat my dinner at the dining table with the rest of the family.

Family life – are you married, children, pets?
I lead a busy family life, no time for pets. I was recently asked to mind a neighbour's Guinea Pig whist they were on holiday for a week. In anticipation of this the Guinea Pig in question decided to expire within 24 hours of me taking over before I had even had the opportunity to tend to him on the first day. Now that did take some explaining, especially when the neighbours arrived home 3 days ahead of schedule before I had the chance to bring in a substitute!

If you could have worked on any building project in the world past or present what would it be and why?
The Apollo Space project. Sending a man to the moon using slide-rule technology is a fairly impressive feat (as well as the reward of being able to smoke Cuban cigars in the workplace!) – oh how times have changed.

If you could have any job in the world for a day what would it be and why?
A vet.
