Beverley Stevenson
Job Title Associate Planner
Role – explain what you do at Strategic Planning On a daily basis, I provide planning advice on a wide range of development proposals. I prepare and manage planning applications, appeals, feasibility reports and coordinate Environmental Statements. I was also responsible for representing our clients at the BMAP Public Inquiry and prepared rebuttals. More recently, I've gained experience in a few Judicial Reviews cases having prepared sworn affidavits.
Brief background on your career and qualifications In 1998, I graduated from Queen's University of Belfast with an honours degree in geography, and then in 2000 with a masters degree in town and country planning. I'm a chartered member of the Royal Town Planning Institute and sit on the branch executive committee.
Shortly after graduating, I joined the DoE Planning Service as a planning assistant. I was with the Department for 6 years and during this time, I was promoted a few times reaching the grade of senior planner. Most of my experience was gained in dealing with minor and major complex planning applications and any subsequent planning appeals for the City of Belfast, including some controversial projects, such as Obel, St. Anne's Square and the Grand Opera Extension to name just a few. For a short period, I worked in the development plan team for the Belfast Metropolitan Area, participating in the very early stages of the preparation of the public inquiry. I also worked in Planning Service headquarters as part of a mixed administrative and planning team specifically set up to examine ways to improve the operations of the N.I planning system.
In 2006, I made the big move to the private sector and joined Strategic Planning which has provided me with vast experience.
What do you do outside of work – hobbies, interests etc I love travelling to new cities or lying on a sunny beach. I also enjoy walking, pilates, and socialising with friends. I've done the odd marathon relay in my sportier times!
Family life – are you married, children, pets? Not yet, but hopefully one day for all three!
If you could have worked on any building project in the world past or present what would it be and why? I love sunnier climates, and the visual contrast of both old worldly buildings and contemporary slimline glass buildings sitting side by side, so it has to be a building project in the fav city of Barcelona. |
