Job Title
Associate Planner

Role – explain what you do at Strategic Planning
Provide planning advice on a wide range of development proposals; preparing, submitting and managing planning applications, appeals and feasibility reports; preparing and coordinating Environmental Statements and preparing Design Concept Statements for major proposals.

Brief background on your career and qualifications
I hold a BSc Honours degree in Geography and an MSc in Town & Country Planning, both of which were obtained from Queens University Belfast. I'm also a Corporate Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (MRTPI).

I began my planning career with the Planning Service, working in the Development Control section of the Belfast office for 4 years. Whilst there, I was involved in assessing a number of major development proposals, including Victoria Square, the Invest NI HQ building and major residential extensions to Ligoniel village in North Belfast.

What do you do outside of work – hobbies, interests etc
Outside of work I enjoy watching most sports but football in particular; following the (mis)fortunes of Sheffield United. I also enjoy music and, when I get the chance, playing the drums.

Family life – are you married, children, pets?
I’m married to Jo and have two kids, Benjamin and Rachel. Chasing after them is really what I do outside of work!

If you could have worked on any building project in the world past or present what would it be and why?
I'm a big fan of Art Deco architecture and buildings and love their symmetry and grandeur, so a toss-up between the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building in New York. I've visited both and think the Chrysler is a little more refined and just edges it. Both are quite stunning though.
