Ryan McBirney

Job Title
Planning Consultant

Role – explain what you do at Strategic Planning
As a member of Strategic Planning's planning team, I provide planning advice on a wide range of development proposals; preparing, submitting and managing planning applications, appeals, certificates of lawful use and development, and feasibility reports. This includes providing planning advice to various private and public sector bodies on a range of subject matters.

Brief background on your career and qualifications
I graduated from University of Ulster in 2000 with a BSc (Hons) in Geography. I began my Planning career in DOE Planning Service NI where I worked in various posts including Development Plan, Enforcement and Development Control. During this time I gained valuable experience in dealing with a vast array of planning applications including residential, industrial, educational, health and commercial proposals.

What do you do outside of work - hobbies, interests etc
Outside of work I enjoy country sports, training my spaniels, DIY, watching all kinds of sport, and playing golf. I also love to go to the cinema and enjoy eating out with friends and family

Family life – are you married, children, pets?
I am married to Noeleen and whilst we have no children we do have the pleasure of looking after two very enthusiastic spaniels which is a full time job

If you could have worked on any building project in the world past or present what would it be and why?
I would like to have worked on the Tower 2 project team for the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur. The Design Team meeting for the then world's tallest building project would have been very interesting indeed but beating the Tower 1 team to completion having started construction after them would have been even more rewarding.

If you could have any job in the world for a day what would it be and why?
It would have to be a day in the life of the manager of Liverpool Football Club with an open cheque book and during the transfer window. This would help settle a lot of arguments among fellow supporters, and quite possibly cause a few too.
